Explain the issue clearly and look for solutions to lower your ping during games.
Hello, Recently I bought a new pc to play games on, before that I would game on a xbox one s. My internet is not the best but most of the time online gaming works well with some high ping issues every now and then like during server maintenance or something but not often. Ever since I switched platforms and played on pc it worked smooth for the first week or so and 3 days ago it started working horribly due to high ping staying consistently at 160 and above. I havent done anything to my pc I just turned it on after work and then latency has been an issue since, I've tried the ol turning it off and back on again, and some stuff that wasn't clearly bullcrap on youtube to try and troubleshoot it myself, I checked the servers in the games I play and all are the most optimal ones to play on for me, so Idk. I'm gonna plug in my xbox and see if it happens on there too now while I wait on replies, if you have any idea what would cause ping to hover around 160 please reply and help me out if you want too. also youtube thumbnails don't see to load for some reason but I can watch 4k videos 60 fps fine, just the thumbnails dont work. this started when the high ping in games happened.
Check your connection quality with Wi-Fi versus Ethernet. Use speedtest to measure performance. A latency of 160ms suggests limited improvement unless you can choose a closer server site.
I don’t have a long explanation, just a quick note. *cough* wife *cough* Anyway. 30 mbs down 2 up windstream i5 10400f rtx 2060 16gb ram 1tb ssd 600 watt ps
Based on the signal, the Wi-Fi connection shows a higher ping compared to the LAN. It would be better to switch to the LAN for improved performance.
I’m not trying to come across as unthankful, but this feedback is really upsetting. Every time I attempt a fix, it feels like a trick or something mysterious, and no one explains the details. If Lan doesn’t help, I’m stuck. There must be a clear reason behind these issues—after all, it’s hard to solve problems just by reading this page. It feels like someone is dismissing my situation, making me wonder if I should even reach out to my provider. This is really frustrating and confusing.
Information moves through time and space. Copper connections perform better than Wi-Fi for speed in this case. Light-based signals outshine copper, allowing data to travel instantly. This is just how physics works. The reason for slow response times depends on the distance your data must cover from your device to the server. When the server is close to your ISP provider, latency stays low. If it's across continents, the journey takes much longer. Your setup looks like this: Wi-Fi/LAN → modem → copper/air/optical → ISP → game server. Modem to ISP via optical is nearly instant, while cable is slower and cellular even more so. In Asia, my ping to a game server is 20-50ms. Choosing servers in the USA or Europe increases latency to 100-200ms. You can't change this, not even your ISP.
The suggestion is that Ethernet offers the most dependable performance and steady speed compared to WiFi, particularly when you need minimal lag for online gaming. It’s hard to ignore this point. WiFi struggles with speed and latency because signals fade with distance and are easily blocked by walls, floors, concrete, metal, and other electronic devices. You won’t find it matching the reliability of a wired connection. Consider WiFi mainly as a convenience. You can still tweak your settings to get the best possible results in your current setup, but keep in mind these factors can shift over time. What model does your wireless router have? How far is your PC from it? Are there any barriers like floors or walls? Try these steps: restart the router, update or reinstall the adapter drivers on the latest version available, move closer if possible, clear nearby obstacles, and use a WiFi analyzer app to check channel usage. Also, capture a screenshot of your router’s settings without passwords so we can review adjustments.
Thank you for your message. It makes a lot of sense now. In the future, I plan to switch to a cable service, but right now it's just causing a lot of trouble. My wife doesn't want me to make that change, so I'm waiting to see how things improve after they complete their repairs. If it doesn't resolve, I'll let you know what steps to take next. Your help was really appreciated.
