Experiencing very slow data transfers?
Experiencing very slow data transfers?
Hello everyone, I’m not sure if this is the right place for my questions. I recently switched from Windows Home Server 2011 to Windows 10 Pro because the system was constrained to only 8GB of RAM and other problems emerged. Since the upgrade, my network speeds have plummeted dramatically, which is really frustrating. I’m currently using Storage Spaces in parity mode—though it’s slow, which makes it unusable at the moment. I’ve also heard that Primocache could improve write performance, so I’m testing it out before purchasing, but it hasn’t helped much in my application. I’m trying to figure out if I’m doing something wrong. This has been a long post, but I want to share everything I’ve tried and what’s still happening.
Usage: Plex File Storage Remote and Onsite Backup
Server: Windows 10 Pro (latest version, brand new drive)
Gigabyte GA-880G Athlon II X4 610e 16GB
Corsair 1333mhz Samsung 860evo 250gb (OS) connected via SATA to MBOO
Samsung 860evo 250gb (Primocache) connected via SATA to MBOO
Norco RPC-4220 Case with SAS 6GB backplanes
Storage Pool: (using Windows Storage Spaces)
7.24 TB running parity, 4 x 2TB Samsung HDDs (SATA2) – yes, I received them free
2 x 2TB WD HDDs (SATA3) – not yet connected
BUNCH of other HDDs – currently unconnected, so not affecting the issue.
(All pooled HDDs are running on an LSI SAS9223-8i card, which is being replaced soon.)
Problem: Moving movies and shows from the main PC to the server (via Windows Explorer) is slow—around 1.5 to 12MB/s.
A while back, I ran Windows Home Server 2011 and got 100MB/s+ with the same setup. I wanted to upgrade for more RAM and security, but after a short period it slowed down again. I read that Windows Storage Spaces is slow for writes, so I’m considering Primocache. I’ve tried it with CrystaldiskMark and saw speeds of 400–500MB/s with caching, but not during network transfers. When caching was off, I still got 80–100MB/s writes on the server. No caching at the main PC, but network transfers are making everything unusable.
I’ve set up PrimoCache to use the full 250GB of one Samsung SSD and 1GB of L1 cache (just for testing). I increased the L1 cache to 10GB, but it didn’t fix the speed issues. I’m still waiting to see if adjusting settings helps.
I’m trying to understand why this is happening and what I might be doing wrong. Thanks for any advice you can offer.
