Experiencing unexpected stops while using 3D applications.
I’ve started using 3-D printing more often and working with my 3-D software. But sometimes my computer crashes quickly, causing it not to blue screen properly. Background audio keeps playing, yet the screen freezes and the NUM lock doesn’t function. I hope it would at least display a blue screen so I could examine the dump file. I have other dump files, but they don’t appear to be linked to this issue. I suspect it’s not a virus since I have an Avast One subscription. A memory check showed no errors. The only odd thing is that I can’t run a stress test through AMD Radeon software. If there was background software running, I wouldn’t know because Task Manager shows everything appears normal and many programs are open. As for using all 32 GB of RAM, I’ve only used up to 15 GB during tasks. Edited May 3, 2022 by TUF ASUS x570 user
I need to know the tools you're using—such as modeling software or slicer—and whether your hardware is boosted. Also, let me understand if any crashes happen at normal performance levels, which app or function triggers them, and if certain operations are more prone to failure. More details will help pinpoint the issue accurately.
I’ve experienced the same problem regardless of whether I’m using Affinia slicer, Cura, or TierTime. I stopped overclocking a while back, and it’s not worth the effort. I’m not sure my RAM is overclocked either. It looks like 3-D applications are the culprits, though no single program always triggers it. Sometimes AutoDesk Inventor freezes or crashes, but usually it recovers on its own.
If this involves any 3D software, a driver problem might be at play. My system uses an RX 580 with 8GB of RAM, and I've noticed my GPU driver frequently crashing in a similar way (black screen, audio still playing, sometimes it recovers). The last time this occurred I rolled back the driver to version 22.4.2 and it fixed the issue. You seem to be using the most recent driver version from April 19, 2022—specifically the Adrenalin 22.4.2 optional update. Consider running DDU to clear drivers and try installing the 22.3.1 package instead to check if that resolves the problem. Also, make sure Windows isn't set to auto-update drivers, as updates can sometimes cause unexpected behavior.
I thought it might be the graphics card, but I assumed it was due to the brand I own. I had to try numerous drivers when I first got the card a few years ago, and it seems there have been persistent issues. Finding a driver that worked smoothly was uncommon. While I appreciate the sapphire nitro+ special edition, it doesn’t perform well in practice. I just need to confirm if this is the real cause before swapping parts accidentally. If so, it’s likely what led to the budget build failing. It still surprises me that it affects caps lock and num lock on the keyboard, which shouldn’t be processor-related.
Based on the signs, the GPU isn't necessarily faulty. You're experiencing blackouts while the system remains active, driver crashes occur, and the issues match what's seen before. I'd consider reverting to an older driver version and instructing Windows not to update drivers before investing in a new GPU.
It seems you're facing challenges with rolling back your drivers for the RX 580. While your GPU is still performing well, the AMD drivers have been a persistent issue since the start. Although some games run smoothly, the experience has become frustrating over time. I understand you're not eager to upgrade right now due to cost concerns, especially if you prefer the current setup. You mentioned past issues with 3D applications and recalling similar problems in the past, like the screen going black in Windows 10 updates. It's clear this situation is affecting your confidence in the drivers. Keep exploring alternatives, and stay patient as you weigh your options.
I’ve noticed problems with various programs becoming unstable at times. For example, Forza needed to be removed and reinstalled, likely due to a power outage. After that, I purchased a UPS to safeguard my computer from outages, but recently Discord found some files corrupted. I ran the Samsung magician to check my drives, which showed everything is okay. It might just mean my computer needs a reset after freezing.
I checked the software on my new laptop and everything works smoothly without any problems. The model I have is the ASUS ROG STRIX G15 G513Q.
You can revert them if you enable DDU, available here: Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) Version 18.0.5.0 Released. During installation, you may find this guide helpful. On Windows, navigate to Settings → Updates and Security → Recovery. Click the "Restart now" option under Advanced Startup. After restarting, choose Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings → Restart. Select Safe Mode once logged in. Execute DDU and delete all drivers. Restart once back in normal mode. Then install the driver you prefer.
