Experiencing odd behavior in specific games is unusual.
While playing games such as Elden Ring, the computer functions smoothly until around 10 minutes in, then it suddenly shuts down. It operates well throughout the day without any problems except during these specific titles, which began a few days ago. I observed that the CPU temperature would rise to 78°C, still warm enough to pose risks. After replacing the stock cooler with a water cooler, the idle temperature dropped to 16°C and the maximum reached 42°C. Core Temp and NZXT readings showed increased heat output from the CPU. The stock cooler and power supply failed, so I swapped them out with a new 750-watt unit. I’m trying to figure out what might be causing this issue without spending much on replacements or building a new system.
I completed those checks after updating the motherboard BIOS. I ran the furmark test, CPU burner test, and both tests simultaneously without any shutdowns. The GPU temperatures stayed between 35°C and 50°C with occasional spikes to around 65°C. CPU temps were about 25°C to 45°C, spiking at 50°C. When I played the game, it crashed after roughly 20 minutes instead of the expected 10. I also confirmed Windows 10 and Nvidia drivers were up to date. What could be causing this issue?
I fixed the problems by swapping out the stock cooler for an AIO model, re-seating it and cleaning all the dried thermal paste. Even after that, it kept shutting down, so I upgraded to a new PSU. The replacement one worked perfectly, and the other PSU was still experiencing power issues that caused shutdowns.
