Experiencing memory issues and app malfunctions in a new PC setup
I recently installed a new PC and frequently encounter the same error while playing World of Warcraft. It appears as a "memory could not be read" message. This problem isn't restricted to WoW alone. When this occurs in WoW, Chrome tends to crash randomly, followed by Discord restarting and eventually shutting down. Your system specs are: Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit CPU (Intel 13900k), Asus ROG b660-i motherboard, BIOS 2212, Corsair CMK32GX5M2A4800C40 RAM, EVGA 3090 graphics, dual 2.5" M.2 drives (Samsung 980 Ti and 970 Ti). This build runs inside the NR200p Max with an 850W PSU and AIO cooling. Temperatures are normal, around 85°C under load.
I've tried several fixes: performed a scan and repair on WoW, ran MemTest86 (passed), updated BIOS to 2212, reinstalled Windows, used SFC for system checks, bought new Corsair RAM sticks, re-seated the CPU, inspected pins, updated drivers via ASUS and Armoury Crate, updated GPU drivers, and reset BIOS settings. Despite these steps, the issue persists.
I’m unsure what to do next. The only option I have is to request an RMA for the motherboard or CPU, hoping replacing one component resolves the problem. Any suggestions would be helpful; otherwise, I may need to follow the RMA procedure.
Other applications often stop working, especially Chrome and Discord, which are the ones I use most. Right now I'm using the newest drivers for my NVIDIA 3090 and have refreshed system updates via ASUS' website for the B660-i board, following their suggestions through ASUS Armoury Crate.
Have you considered using just one of the RAM slots? I believe an RMA might be unavoidable, but I found a few additional tips that could assist. Disable your antivirus, set the wow folder to NOT read-only, and boost your virtual memory in Windows. If these steps don’t help, we can at least narrow down the issue by testing one RAM stick at a time. If that resolves it, we’ll know which component is faulty.
Executed `chkdsk` which reported an error about the volume bitmap. Windows confirmed file system issues and suggested running `chkdsk /scan`. Despite that, `chkdsk /scan` didn't detect any problems. I increased my virtual memory without success. I haven't tried a single stick test, but if it resolves the issue, it would likely be an RMA.
It could be a storage problem. Start with chkdsk /r to see if it resolves the issue. Use crsytal disk info or a mini partition tool to inspect the disk health. If RAM performance varies between slots, the motherboard or CPU might be affected—check the CPU first. Always run chkdsk before testing, as disk errors could be the cause.
