I just moved from a third-generation i5 to a 2700x, and yes, performance has improved but Minecraft is still experiencing lag spikes. I have 6 GB of RAM allocated for the game, and I'm using the latest driver with 10603g. The render distance is at 12 vsync, but it's still off.

Whether lag spikes refer to servers hosted remotely or local connections when offline depends on the context of your usage.
