Experiencing consistent decreases in frame rates across all applications
Hello, I've noticed unexpected fps fluctuations across many games I play. Usually it stays above 180 frames per second, but it suddenly drops to around 30fps for a few seconds every few minutes. I suspect thermal throttling isn't the main issue because my overclocked system runs at about 82°C on Cinebench (4.8ghz) and stays around 55-65°C during gameplay. However, temperatures sometimes spike into the 70s briefly before returning to normal, and at those moments throttling doesn’t occur. I also tried reinstalling drivers and updating GeForce Experience, but no bottleneck seems to be present. Specs: i7-7700K (OC to 4.8) with an H15 cooler, ASUS Strix GTX 1070 overclocked, ASUS Maximus Code motherboard, EVGA 750W 80+ Gold PSU, and Corsair LXN Vengeance 3200MHz. Note: I’ve also experienced freezing in the middle of YouTube videos. Edited December 18, 2017 by ChaosLord
To confirm stability, you need to test it thoroughly under various conditions.
Run a stress test for up to 24 hours with a tool such as Prime95. If it fails, reduce the load and adjust the voltage. I haven’t overclocked a 7700k and I’m not sure how resilient it is.
Did you increase the GPU's speed beyond its default? Since you didn't mention the core clock, I took the default setting. If you haven't tested it under stress, go back to the original configuration, run the same games, and observe the results. Persistent stuttering may indicate another issue.
Start everything at default settings and launch the games to establish a reference point. Try to avoid any lag or stuttering; if present, it may indicate another issue that's difficult to identify. Since you've reinstalled drivers, consider the possibility of a poorly optimized game. Which titles are causing the problem? If no issues arise, increase the CPU frequency and perform a prolonged stress test—patience is key.
Actually, it shouldn't be the games. If you were playing a small-scale game with weak performance, that could be the reason, but not for these types of titles.
