I enjoy this model, but any FM2+ compatible motherboard will suffice.

The original price was around $200–350 for a case and PSU, and you probably don’t need a fancy case. A new GPU might cost between $200 and $350, but it’s hard to estimate the exact amount.

A 200 for a case means a lot of cash. You might spend around 50 to 75 dollars on a solid case. My first big rigs came with a DIYPC, costing about 30 dollars. It was inexpensive yet functional.

power might not really require a proprietary plug—it's just a wire connecting power and ground. matching the new case wires to the motherboard could be tricky because they often lack labels. audio connections usually follow common standards, so you don’t need a new motherboard if you don’t need one. Just use the 24pin to 14pin adapter; the rest should work fine.

He really needs a bit more graphics power, so he bought a Zotac 750TI. Now he can run most games at full speed except for AAA titles like Tom Clancy’s (we don’t play those). The GPU costs $100.

Typically, issues arise with adapters making them not worth the effort

I’ll take pictures if needed. This was a Vostros issue—front audio, power, and reset were all connected to one non-standard plug. I had to use a screwdriver to turn it on and then changed the BIOS to just boot when power arrived. Avoid using adapters. In short, you should remove the CPU, RAM, and HDD from that PC. It’s best to buy an SSD instead. Although I’ve been purchasing 120 GB SSDs for boot drives, someone said Mushkin SSDs cost similarly and perform better. If your overall budget includes a GPU, mouse, case, and power supply around $400, you should be able to assemble everything.

The goal was to accommodate a dedicated graphics card, but the one shared appears quite compact.
