I’m trying to use a single 2TB USB3 hard drive for my Steam library and want to add Origin and Uplay in the same way. I’ve done this by installing Steam on the desktop and then adding its library (about 1TB) to the external drive. The setup works fine on both my laptop and desktop, especially after the first Steam install. Now I want to do the same for Origin and Uplay. Would I need separate installations of each game so they run differently on my laptop and desktop? In short, will Origin and Uplay behave identically to Steam, allowing a single installation across both devices? Thanks!

Sure, it's a good idea to give it a shot. The most likely outcome is that it will work on one system and not the other, so installing it on both would be straightforward. Expect some waiting time initially, especially after upgrading the desktop from Vista.
