It might be that your frame rate is capped. There was a previous discussion where someone else reported the same problem.

There might be an issue with your game or your system. I can run smoothly at 45FPS on very high settings in Vanduul Swarm, even with many players, using an i7 4770k and a 780. The game isn’t overly demanding, though it will still be taxing.

Around level 4 in the Vanduul swarm I achieved roughly 24-27 fps, but it climbs to about 50 when only one remains. In social matches I see around 45 to 30 fps.

In solo swarm I'll maintain a frame rate between 90 and 110 fps at 1440p resolution, though my computer is a bit on the high end.
