Someone could help explain why it’s tough to test an expensive software before committing to it. You’re weighing Unraid and Truenas for your NAS upgrade. Truenas is free, but you miss out on some great features like single-drive expansion, which ZFS can’t offer. The main issues are the inability to get a bootable ISO and the need to boot from USB—something Virtual Box can’t handle. This makes it hard to see if it works as expected before using real hardware. You’re worried you won’t be able to try it out without spending money, which isn’t ideal. Is there a way to run Unraid inside Virtual Box so you can test it before buying?

The solution involves using VirtualBox rather than Unraid, since Unraid appears to be limited to USB connections. It's possible VMware could handle this as well—worth checking out. I personally use Unraid and find it useful.
