Truenas is free, but you miss out on some great features like single-drive expansion, which ZFS can’t offer. The main issues are the inability to get a bootable ISO and the need to boot from USB—something Virtual Box can’t handle. This makes it hard to see if it works as expected before using real hardware. The solution involves using VirtualBox rather than Unraid, since Unraid appears to be limited to USB connections. It's possible VMware could handle this as well—worth checking out. I personally use Unraid and find it useful.
