Here we are once more, hearing about Intel's problems with the 10/7nm process. Alright, I understand I can't get this CPU. What options suit me for an i7 Extreme Edition or better? I need strong performance, many threads, and multiple cores for demanding tasks like databases, software development, and heavy enterprise applications. Any suggestions? I’m aware of the i9 lineup but are there i9 Extreme Editions with speeds above 3.46GHz? (Comparing to the i7 Extreme X990.)

I'm not sure what you're really asking. It seems like you're referring to the Intel i7 Extreme Edition and wondering about performance differences. You mention Ryzen's advantage in cores per dollar and how Zen 2 offers similar single-core speed to Comet Lake, making those distinctions less relevant now. Why are you targeting Extreme Editions specifically? The latest Intel Extreme Edition is the 10980XE with 18 cores and 36 threads for around $999. You can also find a 3950X with 16 faster cores and 32 threads for $750, plus a budget motherboard, which gives good performance. Unless your tasks need AVX-512 support, Cascade Lake-X isn't worth the effort. Comparing clock speeds isn't helpful, especially when you're looking at a modern chip versus an older one on a different architecture.
The 990x model is nearly ten years old. Comparing it directly to newer chips isn't the best approach. IPC enhancements are crucial when evaluating older hardware. If you're not interested in a Xeon, a 10900k would be a better fit. @r2724r16 Disliking something is perfectly valid. People have different opinions. @wall03 Pushing someone toward a choice they've expressed dislike for isn't constructive.
You're looking for an AMD chip. Zen 2 improves Intel's timing across many scenarios. Picking Intel here means you're prioritizing higher cost over better performance.
Intel only focus. Budget: None considered. Take it seriously. You're considering a motherboard and need one of the three options listed. I'm checking for maximum RAM support and plenty of SATA ports because of my storage devices and an SSD RAID0 setup. The data drive is an SSD, and the boot drive is another. Currency: US dollars. I require a solid cooling solution—no water cooling. Just need to know the CPU model. I own a graphics card, sound card, and a 10Gb NIC PCI-e card. I understand comparing clock speeds from older systems isn't the best approach, but I'm trying to emphasize how important it is for me to get the absolute top performance without compromising on the new architecture. Extreme models have consistently delivered better results for me.
Hey there! A lot of passionate AMD supporters out there... haha.
