Because of a recent Linus video, I explored btrfs and saw it being embraced by many major Linux distributions but later removed from Red Hat in 2018. I wondered why. This OS seems tailored to solve Linux's FS scalability challenges. What exactly makes it useful? According to the wiki, it was built to address issues with file system scalability.

Currently, I haven’t learned much about it that would change my view on applying btrfs to home/data storage.

Btrfs isn't seen as fully ready for production and is often regarded as unstable by many users. There hasn't been significant progress toward creating a stable, ready-to-deploy version. Its capabilities are gradually being adopted by other file systems over time. The main concern I had was its occasional trouble freeing space in metadata pools, which can lead to frustrating issues. Fixing this can be lengthy, particularly on larger storage devices. It tends to be more of a challenge when handling large amounts of data spread across multiple files quickly. Some distributions use it for snapshot and sub-volume functionality.

Btrfs shares many capabilities with ZFS, such as snapshots, integrated software RAID options, copy-on-write functionality, and alerts for silent data corruption—especially when paired with RAID. What sets it apart is the ability to work with drives of varying sizes and dynamically switch between different RAID configurations. This flexibility has been valuable for my budget-conscious setup, allowing me to gradually assemble systems piece by piece. I've relied on Btrfs for about eight years now and enjoy the experience.

Red Hat took it off because it's been in development longer than needed and lacks native encryption. If you're not concerned about that, BTRFS works well for software RAID 1 or 0 with experimental support for RAID 5 and 6. It also offers many features ZFS provides plus some unique ones as @WereCatf mentioned.
