Evolution through natural selection
By Unknown Worlds 9/10 - Steam 4/5 - Metacritic 8/10 - IGN notes: "To begin, this isn't a typical first-person shooter like CoD or CS GO." -Rees What does Natural Selection 2 entail? Natural Selection 2 (NS2) is a multiplayer, team-based video game that blends first-person shooter and real-time strategy elements. It takes place in a futuristic setting where human players compete against alien forces for control of resources and territory within vast indoor environments. Gameplay mirrors its predecessor, with two rival teams—Kharaa (aliens) and Frontiersmen (marines)—both aiming to destroy the other's base. Although their core objectives are similar, each team’s approach differs significantly. Marines depend mainly on firepower and technology to defeat the aliens, whereas the aliens use close combat tactics. Players also manage a currency system to upgrade gear or transform into stronger forms. What sets NS2 apart is its strategic layer: players can choose a commander who controls the map from above, making decisions in real-time strategy terms. The commander can build structures, research upgrades, and deploy abilities such as removing health packs, ammo, or erecting barriers to aid their squad. This adds depth beyond traditional shooter mechanics. The game engine itself is criticized as extremely poor, with clunky controls and a lackluster visual experience. Despite this, the core loop remains engaging for those who grasp its unique blend of combat and strategy. Players can invest in equipment through resources earned from battles, enhancing their offensive, defensive, stealth, or speed capabilities. Overall, it offers a distinctive experience if you understand its mechanics.
One of my favorite games ever. Too bad there are barely any populated US servers nowadays . This is one game that I honestly think could really take advantage of some kind of free 2 play model.
