I followed the built-in Windows 10 downgrade to 8.1 in the Update and Recovery area. It took me roughly 15 minutes before reaching the Windows login screen for Windows 8.1. After entering my password and arriving at my desktop, I realized Nvidia GeForce Experience wasn’t showing up in my notifications. I opened it from the start screen and saw an update was available. I selected custom installation, but after about 2 minutes it triggered an error with only two options: cancel or retry. Then I received a notification to enable Windows Defender because the downgrade broke Avast. I noticed my Windows apps weren’t functioning properly—they were outdated for Windows 10. Later, when I tried playing games, they froze due to low frame rates and glitches. Please help me get my gaming laptop back in working order! TL;DR The downgrade damaged my graphics drivers, apps, and security features.

You might downgrade to avoid unnecessary complications or to maintain a stable performance level.

The interface didn’t quite meet my expectations, and some features felt intrusive. However, the downgrade is already complete. I’m focusing on alternatives since restoring everything would be too slow with my slow 3Mbps connection.

You haven't received any of the original download files.

You can disable it with a single click, and the same applies in Windows 8, so I guess your action was incorrect

If only the shortcuts are affected, you should re-link them on your start menu and desktop if needed. Regarding the driver problem, the most effective solution is to uninstall and then reinstall it—possibly going straight to the installation folder at C:\NVIDIA unless you altered the location. A quicker alternative is to reset everything and reinstall, depending on how severely it’s damaged. If you preferred the look and feel of Windows 8/8.1, you can enable the Metro interface without concern, though it remains available for users.
