Even worse results than anticipated!
Hello everyone, this is my debut here, so please give me a chance! I just got Hogwarts Legacy, but the speed was really low—around 20 frames per second, sometimes dropping to single digits in certain areas. This happened even with medium graphics settings and no ray tracing. Hogwarts isn’t the only one struggling with performance (though this was particularly bad). VR also showed surprisingly poor stats, though not too terrible. My question is: does my computer need an upgrade, or could there be something unusual going on?
My setup looks like this: Motherboard: MSI B550-a pro (set for 3200MHz RAM), CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (overclocked to ~4GHz), GPU: GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8GB (GIGABYTE), Memory: Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO 16GB (2x8) at 3200MHz, Storage: Kingston K800M8500G (500GB), Storage D: SEAGATE BarraCuda 2TB (st2000dm008-2fr102), PSU: Corsair CX650M (650W).
The storage drive seems to be the main culprit. Since Steam and most games are on that drive, it’s likely the slower HDD is causing the lag. I also tested Hogwarts Legacy on my laptop—no issues there, which is odd since my PC is a bit older. My laptop is an Omen 15 with these specs...
Any PC expert has any thoughts or solutions? Thanks a lot!
You didn't specify the resolution you're using. A 3600 and a 2070 Super are close to the suggested settings for Hogwarts Legacy, and I've seen many videos showing players running at over 60 frames per second in 1080p with comparable setups.
Your temperatures seem fine. I adjusted my CPU, but things are still under control.
Are your games stored on your HDD? A lot of my slow performance came from having many games on a HDD, particularly textures and assets. I’d see a lag when loading an asset in, now that they’re almost streamed in. Storage reads matter a lot. This isn’t a direct drive game, so SSD speeds aren’t crucial but will still help. Second, are all drivers current? A friend a few months back played one AAA release and after updating his 3+ year old drivers, got about double the FPS in the same game, same settings.
