Your current Netgear Nighthawk 800 router handles this well. If you upgrade to a custom router, performance should improve further depending on the new hardware specs.

On the cost of others? It could be. Most routers have a feature called QoS (Quality of Service) that lets you control certain tasks or prioritize them. You might want to explore this option first.

I understand you're concerned about the cost and complexity. A better solution might be to upgrade to a router with additional channels and modern features.

Overkill is fine but costly? Not really. You can find affordable used PCs based on your area. In the UK you might find one for around £100 plus extra £15 for a 2-port NIC. I purchased a Lenovo M82 SFF for £80, which came with Windows 10 Pro, an i5 processor and 8GB RAM. I initially used it as a PFSense box, then virtualized it using the same machine after switching to an ESXi server.
