Evaluating the injury on a Z77 sabertooth
Evaluating the injury on a Z77 sabertooth
Particularly suspicious of the 2 pads on the left of the big square ic thingy right beside the melted spot on the ram slot as it looks like something came off, the resistor looking thingy above them is also an indicator of this The listing says the seller got it from scrap and the cpu + ram + phase leds are on so im not sure if this is one of those stuck on postcode 00 (dead) boards or it tries to post but gets stuck, the leds suggest the latter but im not sure if this is a board with debug leds or those are just indicator leds to indicate the cpu and ram are working or something Unfortunately most pics are with the garbage mobo armor and the ones without are low res so if anyone has a z77 sabertooth then a pic of this area would help Board itself is 10$ but likely able to negotiate abit
Uhhh this is z77, its been like 10 years so no thats not an option, and working ones are at ~40$ I particularly want a decent z77 for ram oc shenanigans, haswell is better but havent found any deals on that yet edit: nvm found a z97 sabertooth at 13$ and it looks to be in good condition so its likely just spray down the socket and itll be back to working but currently asking seller to see why its not working or what caused it to not work cause if its anything other than just being unused for awhile = dead or cpu swap = dead its likely dead fr and not just oh no dust got into somewhere and made the thing malfuction ez fix ill still leave the thread here though cause who knows that z97 might just be dead fr or this z77 works but the video output port is dead or something
The damage seems consistent with what you'd expect after someone previously attempted a repair using a rework station. It would be wise to steer clear, as fixing something wrong can be more challenging than addressing the initial issue.
Thats what i was thinking too, but why that specific spot? I mean you gotta be an idiot to manage to burn the plastic, literally just cover with foil and itll be safe, so if this is a repair attempt by a moron ig its best to be avoided Ill dig abit more at this to see if maybe its savable but im pretty sure its not at this point, you have to deliberately be trying to heat it up for that plastic to melt so heat from the sun even if its like 50c is still not gonna melt it
Also the z97 sabertooth appears to be non-functional, possibly due to the USB being damaged. This was noted because it seems to have overheated unexpectedly, possibly from a short circuit after desoldering the large chip. It looks like it was just destroyed, and I’m unsure what caused it. I’ll try an IPA now after I suggested it, just to check if it works or not—definitely won’t. This thread remains helpful even though it’s not fully active, and anyone with knowledge about the z77 or z97 would be appreciated.
