Evaluating CPU upgrades for your specific needs. What's the ideal choice?
Hello there! With the AMD 7000 and Intel 13th gen now available, I plan to upgrade my CPU at the end of the month. Right now I'm running a Ryzen 9 3900x with a 3070 Ti FTW3 Ultra. Although performance is solid, I want to upgrade since I just finished a watercooled rebuild with this setup. After that, I'll be ready for future upgrades until another socket change comes along.
I haven't used an Intel chip since the 7700K (my first PC build in 2016) until I upgraded to an AMD 3900x in May 2020. It's time to move forward. The budget isn’t a concern here, so I know I need DDR5. I’ve already bought a 32GB of Dominators RAM, which gives me enough space for the flagship CPU, but I’m not sure if spending more makes sense when I don’t need it.
I won’t upgrade my GPU just yet—the 4080 is coming next month, but I’m not sure if I should go for it or not. I also don’t want to risk bottlenecking too much. As for the 5800X3D, I’m thinking about sticking with the same socket and DDR4 unless I need more VRAM. I’d rather keep my current setup than risk a performance drop.
I’m not looking for the absolute strongest option right now. I enjoy gaming, streaming, and recording at the same time. I sometimes create “reels” in DaVinci Resolve to capture clean moments from gameplay or polished clips. I play mainstream games and a few upcoming titles like Dead Space Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake. I’m also excited about around 20 new releases next year. I’d love to hear your thoughts on what would work best for my needs.
I recently rebuilt my system because I got bored of the 2016 setup. Of course, I upgraded between years, but now with new releases coming out. I tend to skip 1-2 generations since then—things have matured enough and it fits future apps and games better. My computer works well and meets my needs. The only issue is it doesn’t turn on automatically when I put it to sleep at work. Haha. Upgrading feels a bit old-fashioned for zen2. I’m not yet satisfied with the FPS or performance. If I upgrade, I just want to make sure I don’t end up with more than what I actually need. For now, nothing concrete has been decided.
