Hello. I constructed my initial machine in November or December 2013. My dad wanted to salvage a Windows 7 Home Premium copy. I enjoy Windows 7, but I've recently been curious about Windows 8.1 and possibly turning off Metro. What do you think? (Sharing my own experiences with Windows 8.1 and my views.) ~Stephen.

I’m sticking with Windows 7. I’ve set it up on numerous machines from frustrated users, and I can’t handle it anymore.

Since you can't turn off the metro, I'd choose 7—it's my usual option. I'm hoping Microsoft improves Windows 8 in upcoming updates, which might make me consider using it again.

Windows 8.1 is continuously improving, I really enjoy it on my desktop. I’ve grown quite bored with Windows 7 and 8.1, so this upgrade was a great change.

I believed it appeared in my signature. That system includes an i7-4770k Asus Z87-Pro, 16GB Corsair Vengeance, Nvidia GTX 770 (Gigabyte), 3TB Seagate Barracuda, plus a 256GB Samsung SSD with 850W Corsair 600T white.

I prefer Windows 8. If the Start Menu bothers you that much, consider using an app to restore the previous version.

I understand it isn't possible to turn it off, but I came across a video suggesting it can be... hidden. If you're curious, let me know.

If you can obtain it for free from your dad, that's fine. But if you have to pay, I'd prefer to stick with Windows 7.
