Evaluate the value of switching from an i5-9600K to a Ryzen 7 2700X based on your needs.
I recently discovered a Ryzen 7 2700X in one of my dad's old systems and was thinking about upgrading from my current i5-9600K. It looks like my CPU is limiting my GPU performance, so an upgrade seems necessary. However, I’d need to buy a new AM4 motherboard, which would cost around 100-140€ in Germany. My current setup uses an ASUS Prime B450 Plus, which wouldn’t support the RAM speeds or my two M.2 SSDs. I’m aware my hardware is quite old, so I’m unsure if this upgrade would make a big difference long-term. Would spending up to 140€ be worthwhile? Also, do you have any suggestions for motherboards that fit my requirements, or should I consider a newer AM5 chip with DDR5 RAM? My system includes Windows 11 Pro, MSI Mag Z390 Tomahawk, i5-9600K, Be Quiet Pure Rock 2 cooler, ROG Strix RTX 2070 Super, 32 GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3600MHz, a 1TB Crucial P3 Plus, a 1TB Samsung 970 Evo, and a 1440p 165Hz monitor. Thank you ahead of time. Have a great day.
The 2700X has limited gaming performance, which means it doesn’t deliver strong frame rates. While technically its CPU offers more power, that doesn’t always show up in gameplay. Exceptions exist for titles that don’t fully utilize the 9600K’s six cores, but for most games it falls short. Those needing better single-thread performance should consider alternatives like Ryzen 5600/5600X, i5-12400F, or higher-end options such as the 5700X3D, 12600K/13600K.
