During the pandemic, I had to return home from university and am now limited to my family's slow internet connection. Even before then, speeds were poor despite our payments. Our provider Spectrum offers up to 200 Mbps, but we only manage about 17.8 Mbps for download and 3.37 Mbps for upload using Ethernet and WiFi. We’re using the standard modem (Hitron E31N2V1) and a R7900 - Nighthawk X6 AC3000 Tri-Band router. Any tips would be really helpful!

What connection speeds does your ISP recommend? You pay for "up to" limits, but each home is different. I work for an ISP in the UK where the maximum speeds are seldom reached. If they claim you should see around 100-150mb, arrange line tests to verify. If there are no line issues, consider replacing your modem. The router can handle up to 200mb, so likely the problem lies with distance from the ISP equipment, a faulty line, or a bad modem.

How do we gauge those rates? They seem similar to MB per second. The device might be a Fast Ethernet switch, possibly 100Mbit.

You're checking performance using the Speedtest website. The device you're using is a Monoprice 16-port unmanaged 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet switch.

Your ISP indicates it should be receiving 100 Mbps.

Connecting directly to the modem, then the router, narrows down the options. Analyze and determine what follows.

I attempted to connect directly to the modem, but it refused to establish a link. However, when I connected via Ethernet to the router and ran a speed test, the connection maintained similar performance—about 18 Mbps overall (around 1-2 Mbps more than expected).

The problem isn’t clear, but it seems the modem might function automatically. It could also be a router from an ISP. Checking the Wi-Fi signal strength would help diagnose the issue.

No worries, I'm a Polish person living in the UK. I moved around two years ago. My main complaint about the UK is the internet. In Eastern Europe and Germany, you can usually get 500 Mbps down and 500 Mbps up for around £10. Here, the maximum is 60 Mbps, which is limited by Virgin lines not being available in Grantham. I've tried Virgin every few hours, but my connection would drop for about two hours. If you work with an UK ISP, could you explain what's happening there? Poland has been lagging behind for a while—last time I saw RJ11 connectors around 10 years ago. Also, in Eastern Europe and Germany, mobile coverage is usually near 99% with 4G, and roaming costs are about £8 per month, whereas in the UK it's around £50 per month for similar speeds. I really want to understand what's going on.

Yep it really sucks over here. Things are improving as I have FTTP broadband and can have up to 910mb down now. However most places in the UK only have FTTC which caps at 80. There is a product called G-Fast that is being rolled out in some places and it can be up to 150mb I believe, but not everywhere yet. The UK is way behind the rest of the world in terms of comms, it sucks. It doesn't help when idiots burn down the 5G masts, but that is another story!
