EsxiPFsense fails to establish internet access in Esxi 7.0.
Hello everyone, I'm having some trouble getting my Esxi instance of PFsense to link the outside internet using a static connection. It's set up with the "VM Network" connected to the external VMware vSwitch and "VM Internal" for internal vSwitch communication. The VM can reach other VMs behind PFsense, but it doesn't connect to the wider internet through the "VM Network." This worked before version 6.7, but it's not functioning properly now since I moved to version 7.0. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
I’m not really good with virtual switches and NICs, but I can share that I strongly suggest using a PCIe NIC with PFSense. That’s the setup I use for my home network—it functions as if it were normal hardware. Going through a hypervisor to send traffic to your router and back is confusing and frustrating. It works perfectly with a simple 2 or 4-port NIC.
I regret that this wasn’t placed higher. It operates the virtual machines similarly to a home network inside a data center. This appears to be a PFSense problem since it can send and receive pings but doesn’t route data to the VM’s internal network beyond the gateway page.
Why not centralize everything in one device? Have it handle the whole network, including virtual machines. But I’m still unsure about setting up virtual networking properly. I’ve worked with ESXi before, but not at that scale, and now I’m using Proxmox with PFSSL running behind a single NIC.
