Establishing residential fiber connections
Establishing residential fiber connections
Hello, your neighborhood now has fiber optic connections, and you're considering upgrading from your current cable setup. Based on what you've found, it seems you might need an ONT rather than just a modem. There doesn't appear to be any proprietary restrictions—fiber SFP modules can typically be used directly. You can likely connect them to a 48-port switch to provide internet access. The SFP itself isn't considered an ONT, but it's part of the equipment that works with the ONT or similar combined devices. No special customer verification is usually required for standard fiber setups.
I’ve checked before and I was hoping they’d handle it. I’m trying to skip the setup fee if it’s not needed. Is ONT really meant for fiber to Ethernet conversion? I planned to connect an SFP that uses fiber into a switch.
What approach will you take for NAT? How will you set up the firewall? Most ISPs use GPON-based fiber SFPs, not generic ones you can buy; they need precise tuning. You'll also need to ask the ISP to let you connect via that SFP and verify your identity on their network without using the ONT.
Thanks for the response. It seems the setup was easier in my mind than a cable provider. I’ll contact the ISP and arrange for an ONT.
The ONT functions similarly to your cable modem. It’s the device that links you to your ISP’s network. Certain ISPs may employ PPPoE for verification, while others provide a regular ONT or a combined unit.
