Errors related to memory access in Chrome and programs using CEF on a freshly assembled system
Hello everyone! I’ve assisted my friend with assembling a new machine, and over the past two days we’ve been struggling with Chrome (and other Blink-based browsers like Edge) and apps using bundled CEF crashing due to memory access violations. We suspect the issue lies somewhere between the CPU and the motherboard—likely a bug in Chrome or CEF itself. Several people have shared similar experiences, noting that adjusting OC settings helped, along with some troubleshooting steps we’ve already tried. Our setup includes: - Ryzen 7 5800X - MSI MPG B550 GAMING PLUS - Seasonic GC-850 PSU - Kingston Fury KF436C18BBK2/32 2x16GB Kit - Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 GAMING OC 12G What we attempted: - Performed a clean Windows 10 Pro install and updated it - Installed Windows 11 Pro, updated there too - Manually updated AMD chipset drivers - Updated Realtek LAN interface drivers - Disconnected the LAN cable to test if the app would run - Enabled/disabled XMP profiles - Swapped memory sticks between slots, testing each separately - Replaced memory with a different kit from another machine (with and without XMP) - Reseated CPU - Ran memtest86+, no errors found - Conducted OCCT and CPU stress tests—results normal - Updated BIOS - Cleared CMOS - Adjusted Precision Boost Overdrive settings in BIOS - Used Auto-OC in Ryzen Master - Tried GPU hardware scheduling in Windows Planned next steps: - Borrow a 5600X from another friend - Use the 5800X in the same friend’s machine Issues encountered: - Microsoft Edge (Blink-based): tabs crashed with STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION on a clean Windows 10 install, sometimes CTD - Latest Chrome: tabs occasionally crash with STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION or CTD - Steam UI crashes; background processes run normally - Deep Rock Galactic (Unreal Engine with CEF): CTD when loading, 0xc0000005 in Windows Event Viewer - Blazing Sails (Unreal Engine with CEF): crashes during multiplayer, fine in singleplayer tutorial Other games tested without me: - Discord (electron-based app) - Cookie Clicker (runs Chromium) - Astroneer (Unreal Engine, no CEF) - Cyberpunk 2077 (max settings, stable) - Various games: generally stable for hours Overall system performance is solid—no BSODs except this one. Some helpful resources: - - https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/com...xc0000005/ - https://www.reddit.com/r/microsoft/comme..._multiple/ It would be a real hassle to send it back for repair, so any further troubleshooting steps we can try without replacement would be greatly appreciated!
The issue lies with the CPU. We swapped the processors between two machines, and the problem persisted on the second one but resolved on the first. Returned the CPU for replacement.
