I shared this because of two reasons. First, it could help others facing the same problem after seeing many similar posts online. Second, I wanted to know if this was just a random occurrence or if the oil turned conductive. Here’s what happened: Two days ago, I woke up my PC from sleep and saw a warning about overcurrent on the USB port in Windows. When I tried connecting devices, nothing changed. After restarting, the warning appeared again in the BIOS. I started troubleshooting—checked all ports, unplugged everything, and found that the MSI B450 Tomahawk was missing from the setup, only a GPU, CPU, and RAM were present. I went to a repair shop the next day, asking them to install just the GPU and PSU to rule out the power supply issue. Since I didn’t have spare parts, I waited until the following day. Now I’m 98% sure it’s the motherboard that failed, though I’m still worried about other components. I’m not ready to spend a third of the new B550 MB price just for diagnostics when it seems like it might be the only thing left. This experience reminded me how frustrating it is to have knowledge but lack the right tools. A day later, while shopping for boards, I had another odd thought: the back of the motherboard PCB looked darker near the VRM cooling areas. Thermal pads can leak oil, which isn’t conductive, but over time, ions or dust might make it conductive enough to cause problems. I removed the VRM heatsink closest to the back plate and cleaned the MOSFET area with cotton swabs and alcohol. After some adjustments and stress testing, everything seems stable so far. It’s day two now, and I’m still curious—have others seen anything similar? Any thoughts on whether oil turning conductive could be the cause?
The oil residue's thermal conductivity might have contributed to the issue. It would make sense if the MB was measuring USB current using a thermocouple or similar device.
I believe an OCP IC checks the voltage on the USB connected to the MOSFET's. My guess is a connection was disrupted or rerouted.
