Current configuration before upgrade: MSI x470 Gaming Plus motherboard (updated BIOS) - Ryzen 7 2700 processor - Trident Z Neo 32GB 3600MHz - RTX 3080 graphics card - 750W power supply The PC works fully except for a non-functional USB header on the front panel. Fixed by replacing the connector with the second front panel header. Goal: Move from Ryzen 7 2700 to Ryzen 9 5900x. Issue: After swapping CPUs, the system immediately triggered an overcurrent USB error and fails to boot. Troubleshooting steps: Cleared all USB ports and headers on the motherboard. Disconnected front panel power, HDD LED, reset, yet problems continue. Swapped back to the old Ryzen 7 2700 CPU – it booted fine. After retrying with the Ryzen 9 5900x, the same error occurred again. Thoughts: I’m confused. If a USB device, port, or header caused trouble regardless of CPU, what’s wrong? Could it be the dead USB header in the case? Or maybe only one CPU is affected? Is the 5900x incompatible with this board despite MSI’s claim? Or does the chip have a safety mechanism detecting that missing USB connection? At this stage I gave up and returned to the older CPU, which still worked perfectly. Any advice?

I noticed that view but this board doesn't have a USB-C port. When I brought the case in for the procedure, I only interacted with USB headers for peripherals. I only touched the CPU and cooler. The issue appears only with the new CPU; the older one is functioning perfectly after I reinstalled it.

Reinserted the USB header and restarted the device. If the problem persists, disconnect it and connect it to the second USB port. Restart once more. This resolved the issue. I think the USB connectors use different voltage levels and a front panel connector could be drawing more than provided.

I attempted a power cycle without any USB connections, but it continued to occur even with the new CPU. When I reinstalled the older processor, all issues vanished and everything functioned properly. Why would the problem only appear with the new CPU?
