the desktop features two cpu slots, one labeled 1 and another 0. the slot labeled 1 has been used for years, but after installing a new cpu in slot 0, the bios doesn't recognize it. when i tried swapping the cpus, it worked, but putting either in slot 0 prevents booting altogether. this happened even when nothing was in slot 1. the machine seems to have been built around 2006, and i haven't removed the plastic cover over the cpu slot until recently.
Ensure your chipset has the newest bios and firmware installed. Verify the CPU is intact, as the socket pins appear to be in good condition.
Would you like me to provide the specifications of your PC and the CPUs you're considering? Keep in mind, there isn't full compatibility for dual CPUs across every CPU and motherboard.
Does the RAM fit in the CPU socket on your ASUS dual-board card? You'll need it for both processors to function properly.
The slots accommodate both CPUs simultaneously, not just a single one.
That looks like a vintage setup. I'm not entirely confident about compatibility with those LGA771 processors. Given the 771 designation, I think you're likely using DDR2 memory, and with 32 gigabits per second, it's reasonable to assume most RAM channels are already filled.
