Hello, yesterday I set up a new server. The only storage available when I ran the installer was an M.2 SSD. I moved the program from my old server to this one and now I just need to transfer the data from the hard drives those programs use (like Emby, though that probably isn't important). When I connected the SATA drive and tried to boot, it failed at https://photos.app.goo.gl/53qmvYoKV6jKMU7G3. After unplugging the SATA drive and trying again, it worked—possibly because no SATA drives were present during installation. The NIC drivers weren't free, so I had to download them from a USB stick during setup. I’m confused and have never installed drivers on a Debian CLI system before. If this is the issue, could you guide me step by step?

Just to confirm, you set up the operating system on the M.2 drive, yet connecting the SATA to the MOBO triggers an error. You're asking if it's possible to turn on hot-swapping and install the drive while the server is running.

Yes, after installing the server, the only available drive was the M.2 containing the operating system. I verified the BIOS settings, which indicated that only the M.2 was listed as a boot device—despite the other hard drives being connected. This means the BIOS didn’t recognize them as bootable, likely because they were filled with media files rather than functional storage.

I accessed the BIOS, turned on hot swap for the connected ports, saved the changes, shut down, and unplugged the drives. After restarting, the system loaded Debian when I connected the drives. You can view this process here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/RuJf3TNAqypDR0Jg2

The drives I’m transferring to my new server were installed on a Debian 8 machine (the previous site of my media server). These disks hold the storage for my emby, which is similar to Plex. I followed the guide at http://www.debiantutorials.com/how-to-ad...ilesystem/

I solved the issue by disconnecting the drives, enabling hotplug on their ports, connecting them back, running sudo update-grub, and then restarting. It functioned normally afterward.
