3 foot powered hub connected to front USB port. 5-6 foot USB cable used for back USB for convenience. Both ports experienced "write errors" during Steam downloads within minutes. After switching to a 12-inch cable, downloading stopped with no further issues. I now use the powered hub for backing up hard drives. Backups are now done one drive at a time via direct USB connection. Might need to test with a backup drive download.

It seems the issue isn’t about length but about using two poor USB cables in a row followed by a decent one. Not all USB cables are the same.
