I recently purchased a used Cisco WS-C2960S-24TS-L network switch for my home lab setup. When I connect to the device, only random characters appear on the screen (refer to the image). On the forums, people suggest testing various baud rates until one works. I checked all available speeds in TeraTerm but none produced clear console output. I also attempted a reset by holding the mode button during connection, but that didn’t help either. Is there another solution I can try? Otherwise, I’ll have to return it and buy a replacement.

I have tried Putty (sorry I didn't mention that) and it did not give clean output either. As far as I know there is no configuration on the switch, so how would I go about accessing the web-ui? Also, I tried resetting it by holding the mode button when powering it on. Is there another way to reset it?

Ensure the baud rate is configured to 115200 in Putty prior to connection.

You recently attempted the process and it didn’t function as expected. The outcome closely resembles a tera term, though the system seems to be starting up. However, the display output isn’t clear.

It could have been configured at a different baud rate, which is always enjoyable to figure out. I’d proceed with the reset sequence.

The reset procedure involves specific steps to restore functionality. You attempted holding the mode button during connection and then again after booting, but neither method succeeded.

You keep the mode button pressed for about half a minute after turning on the power.

179000 also fails, producing the same result as 115200.

Consider these suggested rates: 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600. It may be time-consuming, but after some quick checks, a reset doesn’t appear to help with the baud rate.
