Error encountered while trying to install Windows: "Need to install driver to display hardware."
I've been running Linux for a long time but there's a couple of games I'd need Windows for, so I'm trying to install it. When I boot from the USB I get "Install driver to show hardware". I can't even get to the actual installer, just the screen attached (sorry for photo of a monitor). I assumed this was an m.2 issue, based on other posts I've seen but maybe not? I've tried: - Updating to latest BIOS - CSM both on and off - Secure boot both UEFI and "Other OS" - Clearing secure boot keys (and restoring default) - SATA mode is ACHI - Both Windows 10 and 11 If I do shift+F10 -> diskpart the drive does show there. It's marked as gpt. I've tried running clean and formatting it as NTFS, neither made any difference. I have not tried using a second USB with RST drivers on it as I don't have a Windows computer install to extract them from the exe (and also I don't have any Intel hardware). Any ideas what I'm missing? Hardware list for reference: - Ryzen 7 3700X - ASUS Prime X570-P - 4070 FE - WD Black SN850X (also tried with an Intel 660p) - Four sticks of DD4, two different kits
Have you experimented with a different USB port? As noted in the Reddit thread below: Was the USB created using the Windows 11 Installation media app, and then flashed onto a Windows PC? Do you immediately see the screen there or do you wait for the installation drive selection?
I used Fedora Media Writer to flash the ISO. Now I'm trying with Ventoy. Since I don't have a Windows PC to use the official tool, I think the issue lies there. In my area, there are several places where I can get a flash drive formatted using Windows. The salesperson at the local Staples offered to let me use one of their display units to format a drive, as well as two local PC repair shops that would do it for free along with downloading the updated BIOS file online. I don't know my location, but it's worth asking. They could simply say "no," or they might let you do it for a small fee. Many people are willing to help—just reach out. Take care and good luck.
The problem was with the installation media. I used Ventoy to boot the ISO, which resolved it. It saves the need to travel to a friend's place just to get a USB drive. Thanks everyone.
