Avoid using local files or backups unless necessary. Make sure any saved data is preserved before proceeding. If issues persist, reach out to Steam support for assistance. The situation appears secure due to encryption, so further technical fixes are unlikely. Consider restarting the device as a potential solution.

It functioned well. The game stored my saves in another directory, which is helpful. I’m still puzzled as to why that happened, especially since I don’t use any encryption tools.

Steam should maintain cloud saves for most titles as well.

I believe the issue was that steam couldn't decrypt the files it downloaded. The games they download are encrypted, making them vulnerable to interception or virus attacks. It's likely there was some bitrot involved, which disrupted the encryption key. This probably just happened by chance.
