Error displayed on the printer display; "Toner Set Error: Black"?
I have this Ricoh SP 330SFN Laser Printer. I’m seeing a message on the screen saying “Toner Set Error: Black.” I checked the user guide and couldn’t find this error in the fault list table. Do you have any suggestions?
This printer model?

It has been discontinued – how old is it?
Which toner cartridges are installed: brand, source, etc?
Are you certain the toner cartridge bay is clean and clear, and that the cartridge is correctly positioned and fully seated?
More details required.
It's exactly this printer.
I can't tell how old is the printer, it wasn't used too much.
There isn't any sign/label on the toner cartridge, so I can't tell.
The cartridge bay and the cartridge itself are clean, no residues of toner powder and/or dust. I assume that the cartridge is well seated, otherwise I guess I would have get an error message telling so.
I believe the issue might stem from time-related factors and the printer being outdated, which could cause it to fail recognizing the toner cartridge. This is particularly likely with generic or refurbished non-Ricoh models.
Many modern printers now employ "chipped" cartridges that restrict compatibility to only their own brand. Even if the cartridges are labeled or branded, they might still be counterfeit.
Regardless of the source or seller, this becomes a concern when dealing with discontinued products. Once a printer is no longer supported, third-party sellers often begin offering refills, new toners, and replacement parts, which can be of poor quality and potentially harmful.
Ricoh might clarify the error message, but I doubt they would be very helpful. It’s worth reaching out to them for guidance.
After that, I’ll rely on other members who have or used the 330SFN printer. I’m hoping someone else has already found a solution.
Thank you. I noticed on Amazon toner cartridges for this model (along with others) it is listed under the number 408288. It seems surprising that Amazon would sell fake items, so if that’s the issue, it might be worth considering purchasing one.
Hopefully not intentionally. Be aware that numerous "big box" retailers and vendors can be deceived, misled, or have their shipments altered. The principle of "Caveat Emptor" remains valid at every stage. Always retain receipts and all related paperwork in a way that supports a potential return—ideally, if feasible. Familiarize yourself with the seller's RMA procedures.
I've spoken to a nearby toner refurbishing facility and confirmed my understanding. They informed me that these printers received the toner cartridges with a special identifier, meaning only those purchased directly from the importer will be acknowledged by the printer.
Is this a new toner cart recently installed to replace an old one that was working? If yes, there's one trick you could try. This can work only if the validation chip system is NOT used as part of keeping track of use to estimate when it is empty.
Get the old cartridge that was still accepted by the printer. CAREFULLY remove the chip from it if you can. Now use the same technique to remove the chip of the new cart. Install the old chip in the new cart, and see if the printer likes that.
Sorry, I'm not able to provide the old cartridge. I've contacted the seller on Aliexpress about a global chip, but they haven't responded yet.
There isn't a universal "global chip" for toner cartridges. Each printer model uses its own specific technology.
