Hello everyone, I'm trying to fix an issue with connecting a Thunderbolt dock to my Dell Precision 7820 using a StarTech USB-C PCIe card. With smaller USB-C docks I can see devices but only after switching the PCIe card on and off. When I try the Thunderbolt dock (OCT Thunderbolt 3 Dock), it shows "Thunderbolt may have limited functionality" and nothing appears connected. I've updated drivers for the computer, PCIe card, and even the dock's included cable, but nothing works. The Thunderbolt option is enabled without any BIOS security restrictions. I'm stuck and need advice on what else to check.
The "StarTech USB-C PCIe Card" doesn't accept Thunderbolt connections; it only works with USB 3.2 Gen 2. Consequently, Thunderbolt docks won't function with this device.
The choice to turn on Thunderbolt in your BIOS affects the motherboard’s Thunderbolt port, not the PCIe add-in card. Does your motherboard offer Thunderbolt support? Your understanding about it being an optional feature during the Dell Precision 7820 purchase might be incorrect.
Uncertain about the purchase, I wasn’t the one to buy it. The user was just approved to get this card and asked about the Thunderbolt doc issue. I can’t locate the ports on the board for a Thunderbolt card, so I’m choosing the option that this computer doesn’t support Thunderbolt. It’s puzzling why BIOS allows enabling Thunderbolt while all ports are only USB-C 3.2. Appreciate the help!
