I received a HP 20-c020 all-in-one unit from a friend to keep. When I power it on before it starts, it emits a very loud error message. It produces three long lower-pitched beeps followed by four shorter higher-pitched ones, repeating five times before functioning normally. After disassembling and unplugging the speakers, I’ve tested both with and without connections. I replaced the CMOS battery but that didn’t resolve the issue. The only possibility I can think of is using a non-OEM power cable. Would this affect performance? Is there another reason behind this behavior? I couldn’t locate any HP documentation regarding this model. Thanks!

Begin by clearing the CMOS promptly. A brief beep indicates an issue. Legacy floppy or CD/DVD not found. Two short beeps mean no drive detected. Three short beeps suggest a disk not recognized. Four short beeps show flashing failure due to checksum issues or corruption. Five short beeps confirm BIOS recovery succeeded. Source:

You just need to remove the CMOS battery temporarily. I attempted that too, but the issue persisted after replacing it.

You were not connected to power during that moment.

The only remaining choices are A. Flash the bios and see if it recovers.
Or B. Swap the bios chip. (Bios Depot on E-bay)

I updated the BIOS to the newest release but the same error persisted. It seems I lack both the expertise and tools to swap out the BIOS chip. Could there be another cause? It bothers me that HP introduced this bothersome function. I’d still work if the light simply lit rather than blaring the code loudly. Appreciate your assistance and time!

It seems like the issue might stem from a faulty BIOS or memory problems. Unless you suspect hardware faults, try unplugging the speaker to stop the beeps and let the system recover after the error sequence ends.

I’ve already taken the speakers off the plug. The main problem is the long startup time—it’s not a major issue for me, but it could be frustrating for the person using it.

I understand. Right now there aren't many options available. You might want to contact the board and look into other possibilities for your friend.
