I possess an older laptop that I use as a Plex server. It was upgraded from Windows 8.0 to Windows 10 Home 64 Bit. Every month, when updates are released, Windows Update often fails. I've reinstalled it twice using the latest image from Microsoft Media Creator. Each time it works smoothly until the next update cycle arrives. You might want to consider what might be causing this problem. Here are the laptop details and error information:
- Gateway: Processor: I3-3217U 1.80Ghz
- RAM: 16 GB
- Hard Drive: Seagate 500 GB, 5400 rpm
- Error Code: Some update files are missing or have issues
- Additional note: The balanced power plan is enabled after every reinstall; I need to enable High Performance via Command Prompt.
Attempt to connect an Ethernet cable to the device or roll back the recent Windows updates. There was no WiFi available on the laptop after the update, and the same error persisted. Plug in the Ethernet cable and try updating again through Windows Update—reboot may be necessary. A patch was released today, which might resolve the issue.
The device works with an Ethernet cable but still encounters problems. It downloads, tries to install, and ends up restarting before failing to roll back the update. Even after trying to get the update from their catalog, the installation keeps failing. The hard drive passes S.M.A.R.T. checks, but it’s unclear if insufficient power is causing the timeout during reboot.
Right now, I’m using the drivers from Gateway. Otherwise, many unknown devices appear in Device Manager even after checking for Windows update fixes. The laptop has nothing important installed, which is why I’ve had to reinstall Windows 10 twice because of this problem. I’m about to reinstall again and wondering why updates keep causing this issue every month.
It seems the updates might be disrupting older drivers. These systems can be tricky, especially on an HP desktop originally built for 8/8.1 that only supports up to 8.1 with driver support, even though it runs Windows. My experience differs from yours.
It does appear to be a driver issue after messing around with the intel drivers in the "other section" one of the updates did install but the other still fail due to the same issue. Wish I knew which driver was causing it to fail.
