Error BSOD, explorer.exe crash during installation?
Hi everyone.
On a relatively recent build, we encountered crashes during the initial Windows setup. After installing the drivers, the BSODs appeared to stop. I’m copying this from a Reddit post and am really stuck.
But today they started again. There were problems such as Opera Browser not responding when I tried to close it, explorer.exe crashing, and task manager failing when I opened it to troubleshoot. I ended up seeing only the message “explorer.exe has crashed.” Everything seems a bit unusual.
PC Specifications
Model: ASRock X870E Nova with BIOS version 3.16
CPU: Ryzen 9800X3D
GPU: 4090
RAM: G.Skill Royal Trident Neo 32GB
Boot drive: Crucial T705
Additional drives: Samsung 990 Pro
Power supply: NZXT 1200W GOLD (has some coil whine)
Operating System: Windows 11
The 4090 GPU was the suspected issue, but after driver installation it worked fine. I’m not sure yet—swapping it out could help.
I’m aware that AsRock boards have had problems with G.Skill RAM, and BIOS 3.16 seems to have fixed that. My guess is it’s either the RAM or the SSD.
I ran memtest and got no errors. I’ve also tried sfc, restore health, etc., in the command prompt. The BSOD codes are too fast to see, maybe around 0.5–1 seconds.
Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated.
Edit: CPU temperatures have stayed below 60.
Edit 2: I forgot to mention a few details—BSODs began during Windows installation, and whenever they occur we boot into BIOS without restarting Windows. Also, my friend built the PC with me and accidentally dropped the CPU 😭😭 But I think it’s okay.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
Mobo: asrock x870e nova. Bios ver 3.16.
I’m aware that AsRock boards have faced problems with Gskill RAM, but I believe the update fixed that. My guess is either the RAM or the SSD?
Check the BIOS at https://pg.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X870E Nova WiFi/index.asp#BIOS.
You might consider updating to BIOS v 3.20, then reset the CMOS and test again.
I accidentally omitted a few important points: the BSODs began during Windows installation.
Recreate the Windows installer for Windows 11, disconnect all drives except the one you want to install, run it in offline mode, install required drivers while elevated (Right click installer > Run as Administrator).
I was about to start the reinstall again when we encountered another error. In the event viewer, I noticed an error creating the dump file. I managed to see a stop code in the bsod and found the image here: https://imgur.com/a/5yOZVqw. I also checked if any of the bsods had generated dump files, but none did. Could it just be that I got unlucky with the SSD?
