I own an Epson XP-640. Occasionally, when printing anything—whether a 4x6 photo or a regular document—it appears some black ink blobs on the page. Without manually fixing them, the only solution is to run its self-cleaning feature, which sometimes needs repeated use before it disappears. Eventually, it works again after some time. Upon inspection, there seems to be a small foam-like residue covered in black ink, making me wonder if that’s the source of the blobs. Should I remove and clean it? I checked the manual but couldn’t find any guidance, so I’m unsure what to do.

What is the age of the XP-640 printer?
Are you using genuine Epson ink or cartridges? Third-party items can often lead to issues either immediately or through refill methods.
Many devices include sponges or similar components that soak up extra ink. These may not be fixable.

The absorber or housing may just need to be unlatched or removed.

I haven't found any information about this in the epson manual unless I missed it. Without removing anything, it's hard to tell if any ink has reached the inner parts. I sent an email to Epson asking about this issue. They responded with standard questions about the ink and paper type. I replied and they asked for real-time assistance, suggesting a phone call. I plan to do that when I have the opportunity.
