Hello everyone, I’m here to learn about the network gear I recently purchased. - Protectli FW10416, Palo Alto PA-500, Cisco Catalyst 3750-x, HPE 5510 JH147a, HPE Aruba 2530-24g PoE+ with 2x SFP+, J9854a. Currently my home setup is simple: a PF-Sense router, an unmanaged switch, a TP-Link AP, and everything works fine. I’m wondering if you’d mind sharing your thoughts on the PA-500—do I really need it? What would I be able to do with it? Would I keep it for my home network?

Second question: how should I connect the AP units? I don’t have a direct RJ45 to serial cable, will I need one? Is Aruba Central the only option for managing them? Can I use PF-Sense or Opnsense for control? Ideally, I’d like to have six PoE cameras, three APs, and a home server all connected. Plus, I plan to run network cables throughout the house to almost every room. I think one switch should suffice, but I also want another spot for a similar setup, possibly for offsite backups. Starting small would be best. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Observing outdated firewalls gives me a bad feeling. I’d stick with your current PFsense setup unless it’s noticeably slower. It’s worth noting these appliances don’t offer autonomous mode, meaning you’d need an HPE/Aruba controller (with the appropriate licenses) to handle them.
