I'm just starting with Linux and set up Linux Mint on my Mac. I want to know how to stay safe while using it. Here are some questions: 1. Should I install antivirus software and what steps do I take if I think my system is infected? 2. Are all the apps in the manager safe? 3. Is it okay to download files from websites that have a "download for Linux" button? 4. Are there any settings I should change for better security? 5. What should I watch out for or avoid? Thanks a lot!

Avoid relying on antivirus tools. Just skip installing programs you don’t trust.

The feedback on the software manager for popular apps like Chrome is limited, which makes it hard to verify authenticity.

You rarely encounter infected software for Linux. Using the default repos is safe, but it’s better to install from official sources. If that’s unavailable, follow Windows-style precautions—verify the developers, check download origins, read user feedback. Defaults usually work well enough.

Most default repos stay safe unless you venture into new territory. Efforts have been made to include scam crypto apps in Ubuntu’s Snap Store, though Mint doesn’t rely on it by default. It’s unlikely someone would attempt to bypass Ubuntu’s usual options. Linux generally has fewer malware threats because of its design and limited desktop user base—sticking to Mint’s standard repos should keep you protected.
