I will review the details of my PC (from three years ago): AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X, Asus ROG ZENITH II EXTREME, Asus GeForce RTX 2080 TI, Asus RYUJIN 360, and later models. After six months, it switched to NH-U14S TR4-SP3 Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut 3x Corsiar MP600 with 1 TB NVMe SSD. It came with G.Skill DDR4 Trident-Z 4x16GB at 3600Mhz RGB F4-3600C16Q-64GTZN and an Asus ROG-THOR-1200P PSU, running Windows 10 Pro. Within less than a week, it began experiencing low read speeds on the NVMe drive, failing to boot or stop working altogether. I had to initiate an RMA within three months, and after that, the third unit stopped recognizing me after a Windows bluescreen. The issue persists with all drives, even though they never exceeded their TBW limits. I only use this system in my home office for 2-3 weeks at a time, up to 6 hours. Today, the same problem is occurring again—NVMe devices can't read or write properly. I'm really worried and feel overwhelmed. Any suggestions on what to do?
I didn't realize I had returned the motherboard to ASUS for inspection, but they confirmed there were issues with it.
Do you keep many files that you eventually remove? Many users overlook how SSDs aren't built for temporary data. In short, store only the apps and files you won’t delete permanently—always. For anything you plan to discard later, use a traditional hard drive as backup. SSDs have limited write cycles; excessive writing can cause instability and reduce lifespan. If your system uses PCIe4 and experiences heavy writes (such as installing everything at once), it may overheat. Creating numerous short-lived files that get overwritten can also be problematic. Still, these should remain intact for at least a week. I’ve heard about Corsair products and M.2 drives, but they haven’t impressed me much. I’d suggest the WD Blue SN550 or SN570. For maximum speed, the black SN770 works well, though it’s not essential. I’m currently using an SN570 with my 5900X and it functions nicely. Edited August 12, 2022 by An0maly_76 Updated, more info
At what temperatures though? Most PCIe4s have been shown to hit 90C-100C during sustained write cycles. Regardless of rating, the less of an SSD is deleted and overwritten, the better. I've been hearing quite a bit about Corsair SSD failures. What something is rated for and what it actually manages to do can be very different. OP's not lasting a week really does not surprise me. And if four in a row have died and one didn't last a week, what they're rated for is irrelevant. Edited August 12, 2022 by An0maly_76 Revised, more info
