There seems to be an issue with the PC you made for your mother. The OS is now on the SSD while most files remain on the HDD. You might want to transfer all important data before reinstalling the operating system.

Creating a system image seems straightforward, but it could potentially repeat the issue. It’s better to use an external drive and remove all personal files.

Imagine having a storage case and moving the contents to another machine for processing.

No, you can't just remove the HDD and insert it into your computer to transfer data. The process requires proper formatting and installation steps to ensure all information is safely copied.

If everything is on the hdd then there's nothing to worry about. You are not installing the OS on there. If there are files on the SSD that need backed up you can just install windows over that partition (without formatting) and they all should be in a folder called "windows.old" on your main partition. An alternative to that is you could take a usb and load any live Linux distro onto it and boot it on the computer. From in their, move any data needed from the SSD to HDD.
