Looking to enhance your CPU performance for smoother gameplay. You're currently using an i5-6500 and are considering upgrades while keeping settings stable. The recent drops to 55-50 FPS suggest you might need a more powerful core or better thermal management. Since a GPU upgrade isn't feasible right now, exploring CPU options could help maintain your desired frame rates without altering game settings.

You're likely to see some enhancements, but don't expect extraordinary results. Your current setup is aging and will continue to operate that way. I'd check if you can adjust certain parameters to achieve the desired outcomes before investing more in the system, unless the 6500 model is particularly affordable. Some motherboards supported DDR3 with 6th generation CPUs, but a 6700 is rarely worth what people claim it is—unless you also need to replace the RAM.

The 6th generation model offered both DDR3 and DDR4 memory options, leaving the choice to the motherboard maker. Many boards used DDR4 for better speed, while a few opted for DDR3 to cut costs and keep RAM usage low. For the CPU, a 6500 chip at $50–60 would be ideal, depending on availability. The decision mainly hinges on budget, as a 6700 non-k model for just $20 more could be a solid investment.

Sure, I remember that 6th generation supports both DDR3 and DDR4. It’s unclear why they wouldn’t just offer the components separately if it fits their budget.

Some unusual Skylake models had ports that supported both DDR3 and DDR4 memory.

I thought it wouldn't be a miracle, honestly. I'm surprised how well it runs. The whole setup started with an AMD A8-6500 and a mini ITX board, using about four gigabytes of RAM from old business computers. I'm quite happy with the current configuration. Just want to keep the frame rate stable, especially since I mostly play competitively. I have a bigger budget in a month or two if I need to upgrade, but I don't feel like spending a lot right now.

Search for an i7-6700 office PC, replace the CPU, and consider selling the other unit or repurposing it. You could also look at similar listings on eBay for a potential resale between $150 and $200.

That’s another approach I considered, but it doesn’t mean I’m unhappy with what we have. I’m just aiming to keep the frame rate steady as much as possible before diving into a full gaming rig setup. I don’t want to waste money on something I don’t really need or want.
