Since I purchased Skyrim: Legendary edition a couple years back, it appears that I am able to convert my copy to the Special Edition which will be coming out soon. However, I've heard that the Remastered version (Which I'm assuming is what I'll be getting if I upgrade to the Special Edition) does not work well (if at all) with a lot of the pre-existing Skyrim mods. Once the mod author reworks the mod to work with the Remastered Edition, it'd have to be downloaded and installed again. Plus, there's always the possibility that some mods may never be updated. Will pre-loading the Special Edition overwrite my current installation? If that's the case, it means my mods will probably need to be reinstalled.

According to what I understand, the special edition will appear as a distinct game in your library, ensuring it doesn't replace your existing Skyrim setup.

The update shouldn’t interfere with your earlier Skyrim builds, though you’re correct that older mods won’t function on the remaster. Of course, you can always save your files just in case.

Skyrim Remaster (SKRM) differs from the original game in that it runs on a newer engine for DX11. This change affects many existing mods, making them incompatible unless updated. You can keep both versions running together without interference. Also, pre-loading SKRM won’t delete your current Skyrim progress.

Thank God! I wouldn’t want to sacrifice 700 hours of fun and cheese for a better upgrade.

Scripts work well together, though some parts might need re-packaging. Certain visual or 3D elements require updates to ensure compatibility—see the link for details. What’s not supported right now is SKSE → SkyUI and many mods relying on it for their interface; they’d need to remove it if they want to remain available.
