Hello. My ThinkPad T495 comes with 8GB of built-in RAM, which is fixed and not removable. There’s one empty slot for adding more memory. I checked HWiNFO to find out the specifications of the onboard kit, and they’re available online. I’m planning to upgrade to a 16GB stick that supports DDR4-2400 and want to confirm if it will work in dual-channel mode. I also want to know if this RAM will fit properly. Could you help me understand whether adding this module would enable dual-channel operation? Thanks for your assistance.

In theory, inserting a RAM stick into an empty SODIMM slot (like on the T495) together with your soldiered chip would enable dual-channel operation. There might be a BIOS option to adjust this, and ensuring compatibility is important, but overall it should work fine.

To achieve dual channel, generally you need two sticks that match in size, frequency, and latency. Combining different specs isn’t reliable. Blending various RAM types may still result in the system using the slowest stick. Swapping sizes can lead to only part of your RAM participating in dual channel, depending on board support, leaving most in single channel.
