I’m okay swapping the wire, everything else remains messy, but I’d rather avoid removing the whole wall or drilling a new socket.

So basically, just install fresh wiring. You can secure it by attaching it to the existing one and pulling it through, but if the old wire is secured with staples or clamps, you might run into issues. If not, the process should be straightforward. You'll also need to swap out the jacks on the plate, that's about it.

You might attach the cat6/cat6a connection to the end of the cat5e cable, then carefully extract the cat5e part after taking off the metal clips and securing devices. The cat6a should be moved back into its original position. Electricians typically use a small steel wire with a ring at the tip, push it through the wall, secure the cable, and then guide it through the wall.

When the original wire isn’t secured properly and there’s no space for a single cable, using two cables in place of one can work too.
