You can modify your existing ports to support higher speeds without replacing them entirely.

It started with a question about why Cat 5e reaches gigabit speeds. The method involves replacing the old cables through the existing conduits.

Need six Cat 5 cables for a 10-gig home network setup. Also, clarify what you mean by "tubes."

Fairly speaking, if it's done correctly, the wires connecting to the socket are inside a tube. You can also simply remove new cables using a cable puller. Likely, you won't need to replace the socket.

It seems there are no tubes in the cable runs. If there are no tubes, check the installation or consult the relevant documentation for further guidance.

Images show the socket and basement wiring. The thick wires are power cables. I own some Cat 6 cables, but none are connected to the rooms that require them.

You're suggesting an upgrade to Cat 6/6A ports without changing the cable. That's not feasible because Cat 6 connectors are designed specifically for Cat 6 cables, not Cat 5e. Even if you used a Cat 6 connector on a Cat 5e cable, the performance gain would be minimal since the main benefit comes from the cabling itself, not the connector. Regional differences matter too—cable installation practices vary widely, especially in the US where in-wall conduits are rare.

Looking for a solution to switch to cat 6/6a without changing the socket or removing the wall? You're in Canada too—let me know what works best for you.
