That was the initial idea (First Post). I'm just aiming to keep costs low—though AMD seems like a likely choice.
It’s mostly pointless to upgrade the motherboard when the previous one still functions and fits your light-editing needs. The older board doesn’t support the CPU at all—consider a cooler instead. The stock one looks poor, especially with 65W of heat output. Still, clean it thoroughly; dust buildup is slowly harming the CPU. Run performance tests as usual. If results aren’t satisfactory, switch to a better cooler. RAM? You’ll likely need at least 16GB. For NVME, SSDs are preferable over HDDs, even with SATA drives, since DRAM-based options offer better speed. If your chosen board won’t work with the CPU, opt for a new HDD and consider upgrading to an SSD.
The sole reason to switch to MOBO is to apply it in a different scenario since the present one is a tailored solution for the pre-built version.
Search for the one with H81 or else. Here's a good reference. But I admit I rather to just rebuild a new PC with something like Ryzen 3 3300X. Same core, but with more threads that would be really useful on video edit purpose, and of course way more performance. Or probably go for 3500 or 3600 if it's really possible. It's a kind of good investment for the school, as faster render time and bigger performance would be really useful to work on, and you don't need to struggle with another upgrading for the next few years. Still. If your school's only editing at maximum 1080p, just stick with the old build. It's still good enough.
The idea of swapping the same CPU across different motherboards or cases doesn't improve speed—it's just an unnecessary expense. If you're planning to upgrade the motherboard, make sure to replace the CPU too; otherwise, it won't add value. In the best case, it might slightly reduce heat buildup with almost no real performance boost.
